Volunteer Testimonial: Julie

Our scholars at BHGH-SF cannot reach their goals without the support of our very generous network of volunteers who help tutor and mentor them along the way. This month we would like to highlight one of our longest standing volunteers within our group, Julie and share her story of how she got involved with our program. Thank you Julie for the many years of support to our kids!

“My first experience with Boys Hope Girls Hope was volunteering at a fundraising gala at the InterContinental San Francisco in the spring of 2014. From the start I was impressed with the energy, friendliness, and poise of the scholars—and the dedication of the staff. Now in my fourth year of tutoring, I come to Riordan after work prepared to help out with whatever the scholars need that day. I review their personal statements for high school and college applications, serve as a practice audience for upcoming presentations, and quiz them on everything from history to chemistry (just don’t ask *me* to define a molecular bond!). During free time, I’ve also honed my skills at games like Uno and Connect Four, though I still usually lose to the more experienced scholars. As a mentor to stand-out scholar Melina, now a freshman at UC Riverside, I felt lucky to spend time with a scholar outside of the classroom, including an afternoon checking out a college campus and watching a women’s volleyball match.
I volunteer to help these great kids excel, but I learn a lot from them during the time I spend at program. And it’s rewarding to share in their successes, both big and small—from a good grade on a Shakespeare essay to an acceptance letter from UC Riverside. That’s why I keep coming back.”
