The activity was created by San Francisco Park & Rec., where they meet every month to replant native plants in Mount Sutro. There, we had to climb up a steep hill to reach our destination. They’ve set up designated areas where we plant the potted plants. The potted plants were grown in the nursery until they’re ready to be planted in the outside world.

The instructions for planting is finding open space to dig a hole bigger than the pot. There is a big shovel for digging and a small axe to break rocks blocking the hole. Then we gently shake out the plant out of the pot and loosen the soil so the roots can untangle and grow. We place the plant in the hole and cover it up, making sure all the roots are under the earth and the plant can’t be pull out easily with a tug. After that, we surround the plant with mulch so it can keep the soil moist.

I learned that it’s always good to give back to the community. By planting the native plants, they’ll be part of San Francisco history for a long time and make Mount Sutro a beautiful place to hike. I also learned how to correctly plant a plant, so next time If I decide to volunteer at a park, I have the knowledge and experience to do so. Lastly, I learned that planting is really repetitive, but very calming and fun if you have a few friends to help you out. This experience made me learn more about native species of plants in San Francisco.

There wasn’t anything in general I disliked about the experience. Probably the fact that we had to hike up a steep hill to get to our destination, which was very tiring. Other than that, I had a great time spending my time that doesn’t have to do with a computer screen on my Saturday morning. If I keep doing more volunteer work like this, this can be good on my resume and record for college. I’ll continue doing more community service work because, it’s not every day that I get to give back to my community.
